The Litigation Paralegal – Employment and Revenue Cycle provides litigation and claims support to the employment and revenue cycle attorneys, including setting up new claims, investigating claims and gathering relevant information, promptly notifying insurers, preparing responses, responding to written discovery, and working with outside counsel (where applicable). The position analyzes and responds to third-party requests for information and subpoenas, including those sent by regulatory boards and law firms, and assists in the preparation of training materials, policies, and presentations as well as in the investigation of, and response to, union grievances.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Provide litigation/claims support to the employment and revenue cycle attorneys, including preparing, sending, and tracking legal-hold notices; implementing legal holds; timely notifying insurers when a new claim is received; receiving, organizing, reviewing, and storing custodians' documents; interviewing witnesses and conducting other fact finding; scheduling witness interviews and depositions; preparing exhibits, timelines, responses, pleadings, letters, and/or other documents; docketing and complying with all applicable deadlines; partnering with outside counsel, where applicable; and coordinating and responding to discovery requests.
  • Timely respond to third-party requests for information and subpoenas; compile and review responsive documents; prepare and execute business records affidavits where required; and submit requested documents to requestor (whether a regulatory board, law firm, employee or other).
  • Conduct legal research and analyze applicable laws, regulations, statutes, and rules of the Board of Healing Arts, Board of Nursing, and other licensing boards.
  • Investigate and assist in responding to grievances or inquiries filed or made by union members.
  • Assist in preparing training materials and presentations (including conducting data analytics on claims/litigation).
  • Assist in developing and maintaining policies, procedures, and protocols to support the human resources, legal, and revenue cycle departments.
  • Prepare high-quality letters, responses, and other written documents with minimal attorney oversight.
  • Organize, maintain and secure legal files, databases, and document management systems (partnering, where appropriate, with other members of the legal department and/or legal operations personnel).
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate across departments and between the health system, UKP (the physicians group), the University of Kansas and its medical school, and other entities, and with executives and all other levels of employees; demonstrate strong time management skills, and the ability to work independently and meet all applicable litigation and other deadlines; and maintain the attorney-client privilege and attorney work product protection.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management in furtherance of organizational and/or department goals.
  • This is a hybrid role. The initial training and onboarding will be done on-site. Following the initial training period, the paralegal will work in the office 1-3 days per week (this frequency can be increased/decreased at any time by management). The paralegal must be willing to drive to off-site hospital locations (including multiple locations within the same workday.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • Associates Degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an accredited paralegal program.
  • 3 or more years of experience as a litigation paralegal in a law firm and/or in-house legal department.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 1 or more years Experience working in an academic medical center or within the healthcare industry.
  • 1 or more years Prior experience handling employment/labor litigation.
  • 1 or more years Prior experience working in revenue cycle and utilizing dispute resolution processes.
  • 1 or more years Prior experience in administrative law.

Knowledge Requirements
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Proficient in reading and writing English.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, Co-Pilot, etc.).
  • Ability to work efficiently and independently under tight deadlines and pressures, and balance/prioritize competing priorities.
  • Must be detail oriented, highly organized, flexible, creative, solutions driven, and a critical thinker.
