Maternal and Child Services Division
Maternal and child services nurses help expectant mothers through labor and delivery. They also provide clinical care to infants, children, and adolescents.
I love working in the Maternal and Child Services department in Great Bend! I have been in my current position for the last 13 years and could not imagine being anywhere else. Our department is unique because we take care of a variety of patients, including laboring moms, postpartum couplets, NICU babies, pediatric patients, and some Med-/Surg overflow. The variety keeps my job interesting every day."Melanie Lewis, RN

This expert, patient-focused team helps mothers-to-be through every step of the birth process by offering support and comfort. Our Labor and Delivery area has the latest electronic fetal monitoring equipment with central display for easy, constant observation. An operating suite for Cesarean sections is just a few steps away.
The Mother and Baby Care unit, consists of 8 beds, 4 for labor and delivery, and 4 for post-partum care, and cares for patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. We care for newborns after 35- weeks gestational period. Our patients receive care from a compassionate and highly skilled nursing and interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment. We strive to make each birth a special experience for our families as they have been preparing for this event for many long months. We work closely with our interdisciplinary team members, including two board certified Obstetricians and two family practice physicians, pediatricians and hospitalists from Social Workers, Nursing Case Managers, Lactation Consultants, and Chaplains to many other specialties.
We promote skin to skin contact with baby immediately after birth and 24-hour rooming in throughout a family’s stay. As one of our team members, you will have the opportunity to nurture and teach young families, mentor and precept students (nursing students, paramedic students and others), learn about complex disease processes, and share your dedication and compassion with our patients and families.
Pediatric nurses provide a high level of care and comfort to their patients. They care for infants, children and adolescents who have a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The Pediatric Unit features a playroom, treatment room and a waiting room that offers a place for families to eat outside of the unit, and watch TV, plus activity space for young visitors. Our child life specialist shares toys, books, movies, and video and board games to help children feel more at home. A music therapist is also involved in the multidisciplinary care of patients and provides musical therapy and a respite within our hospital setting. The pediatric unit offers opportunities for patients to interact with pet therapy dogs, special visitors, and craft donations. The unit has extra security, although parents have 24-hour access and are encouraged to spend the night.
