Join Our Externship Program
Are you a nursing student eager to gain hands-on experience in a nationally recognized health system? The Nursing Externship Program at The University of Kansas Health System is your opportunity to step into the clinical world, build meaningful relationships, and grow into the nurse you aspire to be.

What You'll Experience
This 10-week paid externship places you alongside a registered nurse preceptor, immersing you in real clinical settings and exposing you to advanced practice roles and interdisciplinary teamwork. You will collaborate closely with healthcare professionals who are dedicated to guiding and supporting future nurses through mentorship.
PROGRAM DETAILS
• Duration: 10 weeks
• Schedule: 36 hours/week, following your RN preceptors shifts (may include weekends or holidays)
• Mandatory Orientation: May 25th- May 29th
• Compensation: Competitive pay
• Academic Credit: Earn 1 elective credit hour toward your nursing degree
• Support & Community: Enjoy educational sessions, social events, and integrated mentorship
• Housing: Subsidized housing available for externs outside the Kansas City area
Eligibility & Qualifications
We’re looking for nursing students who are ready to dive in and make the most of this experience. To apply, you must:
• Have completed your first clinical semester in an accredited Associate or BSN program
• Be on track to graduate in Winter 2026 or Spring 2027
• Hold a current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification (preferred)
• Bring a curious mindset and a genuine enthusiasm to learn about clinical nursing practice at The University of Kansas Health System
