Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Interpreter helps facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse consumers.  Explain KUHS resources, office protocols, departmental policies and procedure; is familiar with Regulatoryand Compliance guidelines and national trends; serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to both patients and providers to contribute to successful outcomes.  Performs duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation.  Adheres to hospital policies.  Understands the hospital's system of service delivery.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Interprets in a timely and accurate manner for patients/family members in a wide variety of settings.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality and maintains patient privacy.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow directions and contributes to problem-solving.
  • Interacts in a courteous, customer-focused manner.
  • Accepts delegation and works as a contributing team member.
  • Performs other duties as needed including: intentional rounding- round on all languages, staff education/in-services on “best practices”/policies/procedures, data entry/ run reports.
  • Other duties as assigned per department needs when demand is slow for on-site services.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • Documented proof of interpreting competencies via language proficiency assessments such as ALTA, and/or education (college degree in interpreting and/or training (such as CMH SBA) that includes, at a minimum, consecutive interpreting and knowledge and understanding of ethics in medical interpreting
  • 2 or more years to 4 years of demonstrated experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Associates Degree
  • Proof of medical interpreter training such as “Bridging the Gap” (minimum of 40 hours) and/or education (college degree in interpreting and/or training (such as CMH SBA


Required Licensure and Certification

  • NAD-RID for ASL interpreters required, minimum level 4


Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) - Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) National Certification (NBMI)


Knowledge Requirements

  • Medical background/knowledge of medical terminology
