Responsibilities
Job Summary
A GI Endoscopy Technician II, an unlicensed staff member, provides direct care to patients under the supervision of a RN, including obtaining vital signs, point of care testing, stocking unit supplies, and maintaining a clean functional work environment. Exhibits excellent customer service skills at all times. Demonstrates competence in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills related to delegated tasks. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Is self-directed and proactive in performing a variety of tasks as indicated in his/her role and as assigned based on patient care and unit needs. Will complete competencies for all therapeutic and diagnostic procedures before applying for promotion to this position.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Anticipates and prepares by obtaining supplies and specialty equipment, and sets up under clean technique prior to start of assigned procedures -
- Demonstrates ability to set up, exchange out and troubleshoot all equipment, including taking responsibility for equipment management/planning for the day’s schedule and communicating issues
- Assists physician during procedures and in cleaning procedure room after procedure
- Maintains scope cleaning equipment and accessories
- Maintains stock of supplies in procedure room during, between, and after procedures, and facilitates efficient turn-over of rooms to maintain room schedule
- May assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department
- Will maintain and learn new competencies as new platforms and therapies are added (to include, but not limited, to ERCP’s, Advanced EUS, EMR, ESD, Cryotherapy, etc.)
- Performs manual cleaning and high level disinfection of scopes
- Will attend Train the Trainer HLD course provided by IPAC yearly
- Performs vital signs such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure, applies leads, and monitors EKG and cardiac monitoring
- Prepares patients for procedures according to hospital and unit protocols
- Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member
- Must be able to meet call expectations of returning pages within 10 minutes of being paged and then reporting to hospital within 30 minutes. Actual call requirements not included in Job description will be addressed in the unit policies and procedures.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- High School Graduate or GED.
- 1 or more years working as a GI Tech I, with no written warnings or corrective action in the past 6 months. OR
- 1 or more years prior experience in a GI Tech I equivalent position.
- Super user for all disposable supply and procedural equipment.
- Super user for all new incoming disposables and equipment/3rd party platform.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Clinical education in Medical Assistant, CNA, EMT OR
- Licensed Practical Nurse OR
- Completion of 1-2 years nursing school.
Required Licensure and Certification
- Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) (Non-Clinical) - American Heart Association (AHA)
- Completed HLD "train the trainer" class with IPAC.
- Completed Preceptor course for Technicians.
- Completed all SGNA GI Tech Specialist (GTS) and SGNA Advanced GI Tech Specialist (AGTS) testing modules.
Knowledge Requirements
- Basic typing and PC/software experience.
- Competent in all therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
