The Unit Coordinator provides leadership in the absence of the department manager or director. Along with the manager, they assist in coordination of patient care activities on a daily basis by optimizing staffing, directing patient flow and assisting in assignments on the nursing unit assigned. The Unit Coordinator has excellent clinical skills and maintains competence in general nursing and unit specific education and competencies. He/she provides formal and informal mentoring and assistance to staff with clinical activities and decision making. He/she actively participates in PI activities, committees, and task forces to improve nursing practice and care. The Unit Coordinator, in collaboration with the Education department and Unit Educator, actively participates in overseeing and/or planning unit orientation, validation, education and in-service needs. He/she works, in collaboration with the unit educator, with nursing instructors and nursing students regarding student experiences in the nursing unit/department. He/she ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning. Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice, serves as a resource, preceptor, and mentor. The Unit Coordinator demonstrates leadership skills in decision-making and problem solving, provides professional image and is a role model for staff. He/she integrates and communicates knowledge and sensitivity to patient's psychosocial, spiritual, cultural and age specific needs. He/she practices within the boundaries of the Kansas Nurse Practice Act, specialty standards and organizational/ departmental policies and procedures. He/she is responsible for meeting JCAHO and Olathe Health standards of nursing practice.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Demonstrates excellent clinical skills and serves as a clinical resource for staff, physicians, patients, families and other departments in an effective and safe manner.
  • Demonstrates leadership by role-modeling professional behaviors; participation in professional associations related to practice, assists with development of policies/procedures utilizing evidenced based practice models.
  • In collaboration with department manager, evaluates staff competency and individual learning needs by direct observation, peer review, orientation and employee input documenting this in the appropriate system. Assists in hiring process.
  • Responsible for operating within approved budget; ensure level of staffing for the level of acuity is appropriate 24 hours per day.
  • Evaluates factors related to safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost and social impact when developing and implementing practice innovations. Participates in quality improvement activities to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care.
  • Effectively coordinates daily workflow/patient care activities, such as staffing, patient assignments, admissions, transfers, discharges/discharge rounds. Manages a patient care assignment as indicated by patient care needs. Works with the Nurse Manager and Human Resources in performance management counseling and discipline of staff.
  • Promotes satisfaction of internal and external customers with professional and effective communication.
  • Contributes to nursing management education and professional development of staff, students and colleagues in an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
  • Ensures availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies for patient care.
  • Assures department and associate schedule are completed accurately, published timely, and updated as changes occur. Assures that associate time records are completed accurately and timely.
  • Reviews and approves time off requests in accordance with department processes and communicated accordingly.
  • Introduces self to patient and family upon arrival to room.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor Degree Nursing within 3 years of hire
  • 3 or more years of experience in area of clinical practice

Preferred Education and Experience
  • 1 or more years of Charge RN or Unit Coordinator experience

Required Licensure and Certification
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Single State - State Board of Nursing upon Hire OR
  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Multi-State - State Board of Nursing upon Hire
  • CPR/ AED/ BLS - Other BLS within 14 days
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 90 Days
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (AHA) within 180 Days
  • NIH Stroke Scale - National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) within 90 Days

Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Certified Emergency Nurse - Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN)
