The Laboratory Point of Care Coordinator, POCC, collaborates with the laboratory leaders, laboratory medical director, hospital and laboratory quality teams, nursing and other laboratory staff to investigate, select, implement, and train on FDA approved platforms for point of care testing. This role writes test procedures and collaborates with non-laboratory staff in the development of policies for testing staff. The POCC ensures that education requirements are met for moderate and high complex testing and develops processes for training and competency assessment.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Coordinates with POC Team, Clinical staff, and Nursing Education to train and assess competency for POC users according to all applicable regulatory standards.
  • Works with POC Team and Clinical staff to ensure all competencies are completed within required regulatory time frames.
  • Travel to multiple sites where POC testing is performed to ensure testing staff are competent and following policies and procedures for accurate patient results.
  • The POCC is responsible for maintaining documentation of training and competency.
  • The POCC is responsible for ensuring all waived and non-waived test platforms, training, competency, quality control and maintenance processes meet all CLIA, TJC, and CAP regulatory requirements.
  • Works with POC Team to perform Calibration Verification, Method and Instrument Comparisons, Instrument and Method Validations. Works with Clinical Staff to ensure QC, maintenance, and Proficiency surveys are completed and follows up with any required investigation, education, or communication when standards are not met.
  • Provides training and coaching for non-laboratory staff performing point of care testing to ensure that staff is trained to the highest level of quality patient care and safety.
  • Monitors and manages POC instrumentation and results within the various POC databases.
  • Coordinates with the POC Team and Laboratory and Hospital Quality departments to gather data for quality metrics to ensure regulatory compliance and patient safety.
  • Reports Quality metrics for Quality Improvement projects as determined by lab leadership, Hospital, and/or Lab Quality departments.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation and databases as needed.
  • Collaborates with the POC Team, Clinical staff, and Laboratory and Hospital Quality to identify and support process improvements and regulatory requirements.
  • Uses and wears PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as necessary to perform job duties safely and minimize risk.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science Biological, Physical, Chemical or Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • 2 or more years experience performing moderate complexity testing in Chemistry, Hematology, and Coagulation AND
  • 1 or more years experience performing high complexity testing

Preferred Education and Experience
  • 1 or more years Point of Care experience in hospital or health system environment

Required Licensure and Certification
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP) within 180 Days OR
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 180 Days OR
  • Medical Technologist (MT) - American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 180 Days

Required Language Skills
  • Fluent English - Ability to understand, read, write and speak English

Knowledge Requirements
  • Meets the CLIA requirements for high complexity testing and competency assessment.
