Security Officer
Security Officer (Kansas City Division) personnel are responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, employees, providers, and students across The University of Kansas Health System - Kansas City Division. Officers provide security services through electronic surveillance, systematic foot patrols, visitor screening, and mobile patrol operations. Officers are expected to deliver professional customer service while responding effectively to both routine and emergency situations.
Provides personal safety escorts and transportation for staff, patients, visitors, providers, and students using department vehicles. Escorts are limited to hospital and university campus locations and campus adjacent parking lots and garages.
Supports customer service needs by providing directions and offering assistance to staff, patients, visitors, providers, and students.
Patrols assigned areas of responsibility, including fixed posts and building entrances, and operate metal detectors as required. Remains alert for unusual or suspicious activity that may pose a risk to individuals or property.
Interacts professionally with coworkers, law enforcement officers, and other department personnel while maintaining effective working relationships.
Assists staff, patients, visitors, providers, and students with jump starts and tire inflation after obtaining valid proof of vehicle ownership and written release.
Provides directions and assistance related to campus parking needs.
Participates in all required departmental training sessions and special assignments.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Operates two-way radio equipment in accordance with FCC regulations and departmental policies.
Prepares and submits clear, concise, legible, and timely written reports as required.
Maintains uniforms, vehicles, and assigned equipment in clean, safe, and working condition in accordance with established procedures. Present issued equipment upon request.
Operates department vehicles safely; reports vehicle damage or equipment issues to a supervisor immediately.
Works at alternate fixed posts or satellite locations as assigned.
Assists with traffic control to ensure safe and efficient vehicle and pedestrian flow.
Screens staff, patients, visitors, providers, and students at fixed metal detector locations as required by policy.
Enforce health system rules, regulations, and policies.
Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
High School Graduate or GED.
1 or more years of experience in customer service.
1 or more years of experience with computers.
Preferred Education and Experience
3 or more years of healthcare security experience.
3 or more years of experience maintaining effective working relationships with public, staff and officials.
Required Licensure and Certification
Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license (corrective lenses acceptable). upon Hire
International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Basic Certification within 1 Year
Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 Days
Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 90 Days
Stop The Bleed training within 90 Days
ICS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System within 90 Days
ICS-700 Introduction to the National Incident Management System within 90 Days
Valid, unrestricted driver’s license, Kansas Class C or equivalent. MVR results must be in compliance with Health System Safe Driving Program Policy.
Knowledge Requirements
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently within established guidelines.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in stressful or emergency situations.
Ability to react quickly and appropriately to emergency and non-emergency situations.
Computer literacy
Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to work in hot and cold weather conditions.
Must be 21 years old of age and meet requirements to be insured to operate a health system vehicle.
