The MRI Quality & Safety Officer serves as the institutional leader for MRI safety, quality improvement, and regulatory readiness across all MRI environments. This role ensures safe, high reliability MRI operations in alignment with ACR MRI Safety Guidelines, ABMRS standards, and organizational policies. As the institution's MRI Safety Officer (MRSO), the safety officer provides expert oversight of MRI (non ionizing) safety practices, partnering closely with clinical teams, operational leaders, facilities, environmental health and safety, and the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for MRI adjacent workflows while maintaining clear boundaries from ionizing radiation regulation. The safety officer leads MRI safety program development, staff education, proactive risk assessments and planning, safety events and risk mitigation, and incident review, ensuring a culture of safety for patients, staff, and visitors. In addition, the role leads quality and process improvement initiatives by applying structured performance improvement methodologies—including Lean, A3 problem solving, data analytics, and project management. The safety officer identifies opportunities for improvement through data analysis, feedback, and observation; leads change efforts; and ensures sustainability of improvement work across MRI operations. This role is responsible for leading the highly regulatory environment of MRI safety, establishment and oversight of quality metrics, ensuring regulatory compliance, supporting operational effectiveness, and maintaining readiness for accreditation surveys. The safety officer provides expert instruction, coaching, and leadership to MRI staff and multidisciplinary partners, ensuring a safe, efficient, and continuously improving MRI service. The position requires maintenance of the MRSO and MRSE credentials and a high level of MRI safety expertise to support system level decision making and practice excellence


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • MRI Safety & Compliance
  • Maintain MRSO (Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer) credential and ensure comprehensive MRI safety compliance throughout the department. Achieve MRSE within 12 months of hire.
  • Serve as the MRI safety authority for institutional/departmental system operations.
  • Lead development, review, and updates of all policies and procedures relating to MRI safety, with responsibility for performing or delegating MRSO duties to other MRSOs withing the Radiology Department.
  • Oversee MRI zoning, access control, signage, and ferromagnetic detection, in conjunction with MRI Leadership.
  • Ensures quality control, improvement, and regulatory compliance including ACR, TJC, and other accrediting organizations.
  • Maintain high-level knowledge of all departmental policies and procedures related to safety protocols.
  • Lead MRI safety incident investigations, near-miss review, and corrective action plans. (process plan not employee corrective action)
  • Coordinate MRI emergency preparedness (quench, fire, codes, disaster response).
  • Develop and manage annual MRI safety education and competency programs.
  • Lead/Chair MRI Safety Committee.
  • Clarify MRI safety boundaries as needed per regulations: does NOT oversee radioactive materials licensing or inventory.
  • Quality Improvement & Data Management
  • Leads quality improvement initiatives, committees, and/or meetings with leadership.
  • Organizes project development, facilitation, and sustainability of QI activities, such as A3, 5S, Lean, huddle boards, report outs, and safety rounding.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for clinical, quality, and performance improvement indicators, ensuring accurate data interpretation according to best practices and standard work procedures.
  • Coordinate data collection, manage change initiatives, and provide comprehensive reporting on improvement outcomes.
  • Analyze and report MRI safety and quality metrics.
  • Operations Support & Patient Care
  • Performs direct patient care as required to meet patient care needs.
  • Ensures efficiency, organization, and safety of daily operations and equipment use.
  • Demonstrate competency in all MRI procedures and maintain clinical expertise.
  • Collaborate with Facilities, Biomed, Emergency Management, and enterprise safety committees.
  • Collaboration & Leadership Development
  • Interact and collaborate professionally with various departments to coordinate optimal patient care, including physicians, nurses, schedulers, anesthesia, and cardiology teams.
  • Assists staff with personal growth and improvement and provides opportunities for engagement in new procedures, leadership, or personal development.
  • Report organizational, personnel, and/or equipment issues to leadership.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that promotes continuous learning and improvement.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • Certificate of Completion in Radiologic Technology MRI Registered
  • Certificate of Completion MRSO
  • 5 or more years experience in MRI
  • 1 or more years MRSO experience

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree Business, IT, Data Analytics, Healthcare Admin, or Similar
  • Certificate of Completion in Radiologic Technology
  • 2 or more years Experience in an academic healthcare setting
  • 1 or more years Project management, Microsoft Excel etc.

Required Licensure and Certification
  • Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) - American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety(ABMRS) Completion of and certified as an MRSE within 1 Year
  • Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) - American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety(ABMRS) MRSO minimum 1 year experience upon Hire
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) upon Hire
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR) - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) upon Hire
  • Licensed by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts within 30 Days

Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) - National Association of Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) National Association of Healthcare Quality or similar like IHI

Required Language Skills
  • Fluent English -

Knowledge Requirements
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet inflexible deadlines while maintaining composure
  • Excellent communication, writing, organizational, time-management, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, administrative staff, clinical personnel, peers, and patients.
  • Demonstrate persistence in solving problems.
  • Travel between UKHS sites/locations.
