Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Chaplain will help ensure on-call coverage for our 24/7 hospital facility. Provides pastoral/spiritual care across the continuum of care to patients and families with diverse religious traditions. This position will cover call for weeknights, weekends, and will occasionally cover dayshift.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Demonstrates competence in the areas of critical thinking, interpersonal relationships, and technical skills by providing pastoral/spiritual care.
  • Provides pastoral/spiritual care across the continuum of care to patients and families with diverse religious traditions.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively interact with and provide pastoral spiritual support to patients/families/staff outside of the ordained’s spiritual tradition.
  • Functions as pastoral/spiritual resource person for the hospital staff and students.
  • Using counseling/psychology background and skills for organization, helps coordinate the psychological/spiritual/emotional support response for staff impacted by significant patient events (second victim).
  • Administers sacraments, as needed, to patients of diverse ages and traditions.
  • Conducts formal worship services open to patients, families, staff, physicians, students and others.
  • Ensures ""devotional materials” are available to meet the diverse needs of the patient, family and employee population.
  • Functions in a team environment with other chaplains to coordinate pastoral/ spiritual care of all patients and plan pastoral/spiritual activities throughout the institution.
  • As needed, provides off- hours (on-call) coverage in conjunction with other Chaplains on a rotational basis.
  • Collaborates effectively with other chaplains to evaluate the effectiveness of current systems and processes and generate ideas to enable the pastoral care program to meet the needs of the diverse patient and employee population.
  • Represents the hospital in the community through talks and activities in various professional groups and maintains relationship with community clergy.
  • Demonstrates the ability to enter and retrieve information from an electronic health record and to utilize computer technology in the course of daily work.
  • Participates in hospital committee and educational endeavors as assigned.
  • Participates in the effective and appropriate recruitment, development and over sight of volunteer staff to support the department.
  • Demonstrates ability to participate in the ongoing deployment of a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality and maintains patient privacy.
  • Interacts in a courteous, customer-focused manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide service safely and efficiently.

  • Recognizes the relationship between cost-effective use of resources and quality patient service.
  • Recognizes the relationship between effective pastoral care and the patient experience of care.
  • Recognizes threats to patient/family safety and takes action appropriately.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and department, and standards and policies.
  • Demonstrates safe, independent judgment in completing Chaplain responsibilities.
  • Performs all written communications accurately, legibly, and per department standards.
  • Adhere to the University of Kansas Hospital’s established “Code of ‘Ethics”.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and department policies, and standards.
  • Recommends ideas for change/improvement within the framework of department, and hospital standards and goals/outcomes.
  • Interact with health team members to meet immediate and specific needs.
  • Receives/relays all forms of communication/interpretation accurately, promptly, courteously, and to the appropriate personnel/department in support of safe patient care.
  • Works with other disciplines to accommodate seamless care.
  • Function as a team player assisting others in carrying out departmental duties and tasks as directed.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, or Related religious/spiritual field
  • 1 or more years clinical or pastoral experience working with people of inter-faith, inter-religious and /or non-denominational backgrounds


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Ordained and/or endorsed by denomination to which the chaplain belongs


Preferred Licensure and Certification

  • Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as recognized by a national certification organization.
