Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Operating Room Technician is responsible for ensuring necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are available for a variety of surgical procedures. The Technician should be familiar with various instruments and equipment used in the surgical setting and able to demonstrate competency with using each. He/she should be able to anticipate physician needs using preference cards, communicating with the physician, and utilizing other available sources of information to coordinate providing the necessary items to complete the procedure. Assisting the physician with the surgical procedure, proper instrument handling, and maintenance of a sterile field are all part of the ORT's role. The ORT should have a solid understanding of aseptic technique and instrument processing. The ORT will assist the circulating RN with miscellaneous duties as directed by the RN.

Responsibilities:

  • Consistently meets work schedule.
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to maintain the sterile environment and to minimize potential for infection with excellent aseptic technique, ensuring sterility of items prior to placing on sterile field, limiting traffic in/out of the OR suite, observing for breaks in sterile technique.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prioritize, organize and plan for necessary equipment, supplies and instruments in a timely and efficient manner and demonstrates knowledge, competence and ability to operate devices used.
  • Knowledgeable of surgical procedures assigned.Uses available resources to become familiar with assignments and effectively plans for optimal patient care and physician needs.Provides surgical services manager with information for preference card updates as needed.
  • Performs timely and efficient room turnovers, prepares for assigned cases prior to the case to minimize delays.Actively involved in room turnovers and functions in a manner to minimize scheduling delays.Uses good use of downtime and communicates to team effectively.
  • Acts as a preceptor and mentor as necessary to assure others are trained and oriented to the scrub position and does so by creating a positive learning environment
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to properly decontaminate and sterilize instruments per policy and in a manner to reduce potential for infections.
  • Responds to direction from the circulating nurse with a positive, teamwork attitude.Demonstrates knowledge of scope of practice and performs within the scope of practice.


JOB REQUIREMENTS Required: High School or GED Healthcare Provider CPR – (American Heart Association ONLY) Preferred: Completion of a recognized Operating Room Technician program. 1 - 3 years of experience
