Position Summary / Career Interest:

Vascular Sonographers provide professional, safe and compassionate peripheral vascular care to all patient populations. They are uniquely trained, dedicated in the care to all patient populations. The sonographer is responsible for producing dynamic and static visual images of internal structures, analyses of hemodynamics of vasculature and communicating findings to the interpreting Vascular Surgeon and Radiologist credentialed in vascular and cardiovascular interpretation. The sonographer is able to identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences consistent with different disease processes. They adapt the routine protocol to a wide range of patients and disease-state variability, making each exam individual and unique. The sonographer manages the initiation of critical value notification to expedite optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtains a patient history and performs a pre-ultrasound procedure assessment; utilizes their professional knowledge to verify that the   exam ordered is consistent with the patient history, indication and/or diagnosis and assessment findings; if inconsistencies are present, clarify procedure with the ordering physician; interact and communicate with patients, explaining the procedure, reassuring them and eliciting their cooperation as needed.
  • Must be able to perform professional, clinical and technical competencies of assigned location, but not limited to assigned shifts, and be readily available when scheduled to perform additional exams as needed during work hours to provide emergent services under the direction of a Cardiologist or Vascular surgeon credentialed in vascular or cardiovascular interpretation.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to identify and evaluate the appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences that would be consistent with disease processes; adapts the outline protocol to accommodate a wide range of patients and disease-states, making each exam individual and unique.
  • Demonstrates both cognitive and psychomotor skill sets in the area of peripheral vascular disease in order to accurately and efficiently obtain the appropriate peripheral vascular exam as ordered by the physician.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of the patients while they are under their care; interacts and communicates with patients, explaining the procedure, reassuring them and eliciting their cooperation as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment, gel bottles, supplies, stocks linen and empties laundry daily; completes daily logs as directed by the department policy and procedure
  • Organizes the acquired data in the appropriate sequence that will accurately represent the patient’s condition to the interpreting physician; displays competence in identifying, documenting and communicating critical values to the interpreting physician; working closely with the interpreting physician in interpretive sessions, assists in the evaluation of data and contributing relevant technical information.
  • In accordance with the departmental QI program, the sonographer must provide quality, constructive feedback on peer to peer case study review as assigned; return QI studies to the technical director or their designee in a timely manner.
  • Assists in maintaining efficient patient flow through the department, working as an active participant with the other members of the        team. 
  • Responsible for completion of mandatory educational assignments as outlined by the departmental director.  
  • Assists with the assessment and maintenance of the equipment log; makes service calls when needed in a timely manner and resolves the issue and document in the appropriate log; notifies director/manager of issue in a timely manner.
  • Participates in the education and training of sonographer students, residents, medical students and fellows, providing instruction in the area of peripheral vascular exams.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Active RVT/RVS Certification or in process of completing credential; must complete within 3 months of hire date
  • ARDMS or Registered Vascular Specialist which meets the requirement by Cardiovascular Credentialing International
  • Current BLS Certification
  • Maintain CME requirements
  • Driver's License
  • Basic Computer Skills
  • Ability to train in area of competency

Preferred:

  • Graduate of a CAAHEP programor Graduate of a programmatically accredited program in vascular sonography/ultrasound.
