The Perinatal Sonographer II utilizes high frequency sound waves along with color and spectral Doppler ultrasound to assist in the monitoring and growth during pregnancy. The Sonographers within KU’s OB/GYN MFM Department are leading the region with their practices.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positions patients for the proper view of the affected area; selects the appropriate scan images to be recorded; obtains essential information from patients, medical records, and previous scans for clinical correlation.
- Instructs patients about the proper physiological requirements for the procedure; helps patient transfer to exam table and ensures adequate patient immobilization to perform the scan; knows how to change scanning parameters to improve a scan.
- Obtains diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient with the transducer; provides documentation of ultrasound exam sufficient for physicians to interpret.
- Assists physicians with ultrasound guided procedures. May participate in student and physician education.
- Maintains work area to include medical supplies for procedures.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- High School Graduate
- Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program which meets requirements by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (A.R.D.M.S)
- Minimum 18 months active Perinatal Sonography experience
- Experience and proficient in the following needle-guided procedures: Amniocentesis, Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree
- Experience in an academic setting
Required Licensure and Certification
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) OB/GYN within 90 Days
- FMF 1st Trimester Screening Certification/nuchal
- Translucency (NT) Certification (must be obtained/renewed) within 90 Days
- Cervical Length Education and Review (CLEAR) Certification within 90 Days
Preferred Licensure and Certification
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
- Credentialed RVT in Vascular
- Credentialed RDMS in Abdomen Specialty Exam
- Fetal Echocardiography Board Certification (After 12 months of active level II perinatal experience, sonographers can apply for a compensation adjustment once they pass Fetal Echo board
Required Language Skills
- Fluent English - read and write
