Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Patient Access Lead is responsible for assisting management with maintaining departmental standards and resolving daily issues. The Lead will be knowledgeable of all registration processes, policies and procedures, including precertification. The Patient Access Lead will communicate the need for education/discipline/concerns to management as well as respond to patient/customer concerns as needed.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Communicates with multi-disciplines throughout the health care continuum to insure pertinent information is communicated regarding eligibility, benefits and authorization for services for the purpose of identifying payment responsibilities.
  • Acts as liaison between Olathe Medical Services and Olathe Medical Center, and health plans or HMO's to insure compliance with pre-certification and authorization requirements of plans and to facilitate reimbursement.
  • Acts as a Patient Access Representative as needed.
  • Communicates needs for education/discipline/concerns to management.
  • Responds to patient/customer service concerns.
  • Assists as applicable, in accomplishment of identified departmental goals.
  • Promotes all processes in place to prevent denial of reimbursement; when denials occur, assists with timely identification and investigation; When indicated, performs or assists with appeal process in order to promote successful reversals.
  • Provide effective communication with staff regarding any process changes, issues or concerns.
  • Obtains benefit verification and hospital precertification on all Inpatients and on applicable Outpatients and Observation patients.  Documents accurately and completely in IDX and Cerner.
  • Monitors staff to ensure workload is being completed/handled in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate
  • 1 or more years of referral experience


Preferred Education and Experience

  • 2 or more years of patient access experience
