Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Athletic Counselor/Therapist works closely with Mental Health Leadership, to provide clinical care services to student-athletes at The University of Kansas in a collaborative effort to enhance their personal, academic and athletic success.

Responsibilities:

    Athletic Counseling:

  • Provide clinical services including, but not limited to, intake assessments, short- and long-term individualpsychotherapy, counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, performance consultations, and case management to a diverse student-athlete population within an integrated healthcare model for providing physical and mental health services
  • Provide psychotherapeutic evidence-based interventions to student-athletes to cope with mental health disorders, relationship problems, performance issues, and related environmental, educational, and vocational concerns
  • Identify present and potential student-athlete psychosocial problems and implement plans for problem resolution
  • Collaborate with the Learning Services Coordinator in identifying and assisting student-athletes with academic concerns such as learning disabilities and ADHD
  • Facilitate student-athlete access and transition to appropriate mental health providers or referrals for specialized or ongoing psychological services
    • Maintain current, accurate, and timely documentation for medical records which may include (but not limited to): progress and consult notes, assessment, consents and releases of information in accordance with state and federal law, professional ethics, and Kansas Team Health policies
    • Provide after-hours crisis response
    • Participate in the Mental Health Emergency Action Plan, as per specifications for position and dictates of the Plan
  • Prevention/Consultation:

  • Deliver psychoeducation and prevention programming on clinical psychological issues in the athletics population to student-athletes, coaches, athletic department and sports medicine staff, and other constituents
  • Meet with new Kansas Team Health and athletic department personnel to provide information about scope of services
  • Participate in development and implementation of mental health and wellness programming for student-athletes
  • Provide consultation to and education for coaches, administrators, and staff regarding student-athlete emotional well-being, academic success, athletic performance, and emerging team needs when appropriate
  • Collaborate with Jayhawk Peak Performance to design and deliver performance enhancement team-based interventions per coach directives
  • Participate in interdisciplinary student-athlete case conferences, team wellness and performance meetings, and departmental meetings, including but not limited to eating disorders and substance abuse
  • Consult and work collaboratively with the Kansas Team Health Sports Medicine Team to ensure comprehensive care
  • Visit practices, competitions, training rooms, and athletic facilities regularly
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings with Kansas Team Health
  • Conduct administrative activities to support the Mental Health Team
  • Participate in weekly consultation meetings with the Mental Health Team
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Responsibilities of all Positions of Kansas Team Health:

    ·Adhere to Health System, University, Big 12 Conference, Kansas Athletics, Kansas Team Health, and NCAA policies and procedures

  • Uphold standards of HIPAA and FERPA
  • ·Maintain knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules, and procedures

    ·Foster cooperative working relationships with fellow staff members within the Department

    ·Support the athletics department goals and philosophies as described by the Director of Athletics and work to achieve and uphold the department’s mission statement and core values

    ·Maintain a positive attitude toward performing job duties and in working with other staff members



JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required:

·Master’s or Doctoral Degree in mental health related field (i.e., social work, clinical or counseling psychology)

·Kansas Licensure at the clinical level (e.g., LSCSW, LCPC, LCP, LCMFT)

·Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills

·Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed

·Highly skilled use of Microsoft Office products (exchange, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, etc.), project management tools, databases, and system technology

·Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as well as experience serving traditionally underserved or marginalized populations and addressing issues of diversity through culturally-informed practices

·Ability to responsibly work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Preferred:

·Applicants with historically underrepresented marginalized identities or backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply

·At least one year of clinical experience working in a college counseling center or mental health facility post practica or internship, or demonstrated interest in college mental health, crisis intervention, multidisciplinary collaboration, skills-based and psychoeducational groups, and/or working with a student-athlete population is highly desirable

·Certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) or equivalent training and experience

·A successful candidate will have outstanding skills in providing brief therapy in a solution-focused model; with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical colleagues; and the ability to provide consultations to coaches and the sports medicine staff.
