At the direction of the Department Chair, oversees and has responsibility for all administrative, financial and daily operations of the department. Scope extends to management of clinical practice (where applicable). Oversees all academic program development, research and business functions. Partners with Hospital and University leadership in promoting the system mission, vision and values. The candidate is accountable for outpatient practice, education and research administration and management. Key responsibilities include provider compensation plan management; provider recruiting; practice/education/research budgeting; patient access and growth; patient satisfaction; process/outcomes improvement; employee/team engagement, recognition, and retention; commitment to employee development and builds talent pool; accreditation/regulatory compliance; and active external engagement and benchmarking with like academic medical center departments and societies. Key relationships include: University of Kansas Health System; University of Kansas School of Medicine; and University of Kansas Physicians. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

  • Functions as the operations manager for the Department.  Works with the Department Chair to provide oversight of all clinical, administrative, research, educational, and various support activities in the department.  This includes recommendations regarding staffing levels, interviewing and selecting new support employees, training new employees in administrative procedures, evaluating the performance of staff, recommending salary adjustments, maintaining a harmonious work environment and, in consultation with HR, handling performance problems up to and including termination, if necessary.
  • To the extent not delegated to Billing Services, supervise billing-related business office operations for a department.  This includes managing and monitoring all the billing, collection, and coding functions between the department and outside vendors or contractors.  Implement and maintain operational audit and quality control programs to ensure accurate and optimum performance in all billing related areas, including regulatory billing compliance and teaching physician requirements
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining operating budgets for the department within guidelines and objectives established by applicable executive leadership.
  • Develop and maintain efficient department and clinical practice procedures relative to the delivery of quality health care, maintenance of good patient relations, and the accounting and record keeping of day to day activities.
  • Assure that the personnel, space, furniture and equipment needs of the department are continuously met.
  • Actively support the Department Chair and their designees for medical direction in developing and maintaining business plans for the department.
  • Analyze workflow to assure maximum staff utilization; instill service excellence; encourage mutually beneficial educational opportunities for employees; and assure that the support needs of the department are met, and all work is completed accurately, efficiently, and on time.
  • At the direction of the Department Chair, identify, develop, and organize new programs and services.
  • Function as a resource to Hospital, and University leadership in designing and implementing workflow changes that will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and maintain practice-wide standards.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited university in the area of business, health administration or education.
  • 5 or more years experience with a concentration in administration or equivalent combination in education and experience.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree with a concentration in Administration or equivalent combination in education and experience.
  • Experience in medical group management and academic departmental management.

Knowledge Requirements
  • Advanced degree preferred.
