Under the supervision of the Quality Outcomes Nurse Manager and in conjunction with Nursing Leadership, the Quality Outcomes Coordinator implements and evaluates the aspects of the organization's overall plan for quality improvement and patient safety. Coordinators will focus on nursing quality indicators and patient safety priorities and assist with the development of programs and initiatives for quality monitoring and performance improvement throughout the organization. Coordinators identify appropriate unit or department-based clinical indicators and quality measures to assess quality of care and assist with audit requirements for all regulatory bodies. Will assist data collection methodology and support departments in evaluating data and implementing change when necessary. Assists staff with the development, revision, and implementation of best practices, protocols and guidelines, and guides the implementation of evidence-based practice where applicable. Provides training related to development of programs that focus on improved patient outcomes or healthcare delivery systems, performance improvement, program management, and patient safety initiatives. Maintains industry knowledge on quality improvement and innovation and assists with the publication of process improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates data collection, analysis and reporting related to continued readiness activities and quality/patient safety projects (includes all aspects of the department's identified nursing sensitive indicators, all regulatory bodies, NDNQI, and Magnet).
  • Develops and initiates education programs on quality/performance improvement for the Department of Nursing.
  • Identifies, implements and facilitates the use of current research findings and evidence based practices that support performance improvement activities related to nursing quality/safety initiatives and promotes patient and family centered care through the development of protocols and facilitation of education.
  • Models a problem-solving (PDCA) model in making improvements (example; Plan-Do- Check-Act, PDCA).
  • Monitors clinical outcomes and system issues related to quality of care through internal and external benchmarking on a regular basis and on-demand.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary groups to support and promote patient safety through quality improvement.
  • Promotes standards-based practice with staff and upholds compliance with state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Researches and maintains knowledge base on current trends in hospitals for assuring compliance and other quality initiatives.
  • Serves as a mentor for staff in use of data and quality management.
  • Understands change theory and utilizes the most effective techniques to impact successful project implementation.
