Perioperative Clinical Engineering Manager

Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Perioperative Clinical Engineering Manager is responsible and accountable for the overall operations of the Perioperative Clinical Engineering team including; quality of care delivered, customer service (internal/external) and cost-effective operation of their unit. The manager deploys and supervises department resources to meet the service requirements for patient care technology in The University of Kansas Health System Perioperative and Procedural Services Division. He/She is responsible for maintaining advanced competencies in perioperative and procedural equipment including robotics, scopes, lasers, and microscopes in addition to other technologies. He/She is responsible for working with equipment manufacturers and other contract vendors to coordinate the purchase, delivery, installation, education needs, and maintenance of new equipment and technology. Maintains a knowledge of monitoring, service agreements within the Division, providing oversight assessments of current patient care technology, evaluation of new technologies, consulting on purchases and coordinating installations. He/she will develop preventive maintenance procedures and schedules, assign priorities and distribute workloads to the technical staff. Maintains a detailed inventory of all equipment for the division including planned end-of-service dates to adequately plan for replacements. Coordinates with the Director and Vice President to advocate for capital equipment needs and is able to build business plans to obtain necessary equipment for operations. He/She will act as an educational resource for staff, serve as a member of the Perioperative and Procedural leadership team, and will serve as a mentor and resource for others. The manager assures compliance of the medical equipment environment with national codes and standards, including accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Monitor the performance of all employees under their span of control. This includes supervising performance, validating competencies, coaching to excellence, providing growth and mentorship, giving corrective action, conducting crucial conversations, and serving as a resource.
- Serves as a member of the Division leadership team. Conducts themselves professionally at all times, interacting in a positive manner, serving as a role model.
- Achieves the business and organizational goals set for the unit.
- Analyzing, reporting, giving recommendations and developing strategies on how to improve quality and satisfaction.
- Sets targets for improvement for the unit, team, and themselves. Develops strategies for improvement and develops an operational plan to achieve it. Implements that plan and consistently updates their director on progress.
- Is able to identify problems, develop solutions, and a course of action.
- Interacts with others in a positive, professional, manner with evidence of conflict resolution skills.
- Maintains a consistent presence on the unit.
- Primary involvement in employee selection, career development, succession planning and periodic training.
- Serve as a mentor for staff developing into leadership roles.
- Sets daily work responsibilities for the team and ensures that all work is completed appropriately. Conducts appropriate follow up and validation.
- Develops preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment. Develops and maintains database of all capital equipment in Perioperative and Procedural cost centers including anticipated replacement date, estimated replacement cost, etc. Collaborates with Director and VP to properly plan for replacement.
- Stays abreast of new technology and brings ideas and suggestions to the leadership team for possible implementation.
- Actively participates in the capital purchasing process, construction process, and other major upgrades. "
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- Associates Degree and professional training in biomedical electronics or related industries OR
- Bachelors Degree and professional training in biomedical electronics or related industries
- 3 or more years Clinical and Biomedical experience in an ICU or Operating Room (OR) setting
- 5 or more years Clinical and Biomedical experience
Preferred Education and Experience
- Masters Social Work
- Previous or current managment experience
Required Licensure and Certification
- Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) - Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) International Certification Commission for Clinical Engineering and Biomedical Technology (ICC)
Preferred Licensure and Certification
- ICC/A.A.M.I
- Certified Clinical Engineer
- Certification as Healthcare Technology Manager
Knowledge Requirements
- Word processing skills. Equipment competencies for Operating Room/Anesthesia equipment
