Responsibilities
Job Summary
The position of the Cardiac Rehab Exercise Specialist is responsible for performing clinical exercise assessment, developing individual patient exercise prescription, and delivering disease specific education in promoting risks reduction and healthy lifestyle. This position will work in both inpatient and outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation, as well as outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Evaluate and assess exercise tolerance to determine appropriate exercise prescriptions for patients undergoing cardiac and pulmonary rehab.
- Conducts exercise sessions, including the monitoring of heart rates and rhythm, blood pressures, perceived exertion levels, and patient signs and symptoms during rest, exercise and recovery per department policy.
- Develops a cardiovascular risk reduction plan individualized for each patient.
- Provides patient education and counseling.
- Guides the patient into a network of social support as needed.
- Assists the patient in developing strategies for behavioral modification.
- Evaluates, assesses and develops an appropriate exercise regimen for inpatients and outpatients.
- Provides exercise prescription and instruction.
- Interacts with other team members to establish a continuum of care for the patient while an inpatient.
- Establishes relationships with other disciplines and other facilities to provide for continuum of care as the patient is discharged from the hospital.
- Serve as a staff resource in the development and implementation of policies and procedures which are directly and indirectly related to exercise therapies.
- Conducts and leads group education and strength training sessions.
- Communicates with medical and care provides on patient progress and concerns.
- Ability to assist with transferring and ambulating patients with assistive devices.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science Kinesiology, or other health and fitness related field
- High School Graduate
- Internship in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation required or at least 6 months experience in cardiopulmonary rehab.
Preferred Education and Experience
- 1 or more years Clinical experience, prefer experience within cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
Required Licensure and Certification
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) upon Hire
Preferred Licensure and Certification
- Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) - American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) or AACVPR CCRP Certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
