Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Anatomic Pathology Technician will receive, process and accession specimens utilizing the hospital and laboratory information systems. Will be responsible for the coverslipping, organizing and accurate labeling of all slides for microscopic evaluation. Will also perform data entry, tracking, filing, documentation, packing and shipping within the department to assist with duties of both the histology and gross room personnel. May assist in the autopsy service.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Ability to stay calm and organized in high stress, fast paced, environment while managing the activity flow required for accurate and quality specimen reporting.
  • Accurately performs entry of complex data such as patient demographics, insurance information and diagnostic codes in both hospital and laboratory information systems, according to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Completes continuing education and submits appropriate documentation where applicable. Participate in orienting new employees to the section.
  • Demonstrates technical competence with LIS, EMR and PC - Follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards. Adheres to all policies and procedures. Participates in inspection readiness.
  • Maintains an adequate inventory of all supplies. Accurately prepares, labels and stores reagents, controls and specimens for analysis.
  • Maintains, operates, troubleshoots instrumentation issues and completes appropriate quality control documentation.
  • May assist with case assembly, slide distribution, coverslipping, staining, processing receiving slides and blocks for consultation and sending out slides and blocks for consultation.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and/or technical competencies such as assist with frozen sections and staining, photograph pertinent specimens, as well as assist during autopsy examinations.
  • Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
  • Retrieves specimens from the OR, when necessary. Communicates with OR staff and surgeons to receive accurate information regarding the patient's history and what is being requested of the specimen(s). Relays this information to other technicians, PA's, residents, and pathologists in surgical pathology.
  • Uses and wears PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as necessary to perform job duties safely and minimize risk.
  • Uses, stores and disposes of biohazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps, and other potential hazardous materials according to policy.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate or equivalent


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Associates Degree
  • Basic computer skills
