Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Cancer Center Surgical Technologist (non-certified), under the direction of the Registered Nurse, supports patient care by performing essential duties to assist the physician and procedural team with the performance of major or minor procedures within the procedure room setting. These duties include room preparation/set up, patient positioning, patient prep/draping, procedural assist, transportation of patients, maintaining supply/ instrumentation/ equipment inventory, equipment cleaning including high level disinfection if indicated, coordination with Sterile Processing Dept, and maintenance/stocking of supplies.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Adhering to infection prevention standards, sets up table with instruments and supplies for surgical procedure
- Prepares equipment for use (ie: procedure table, ultrasound machine/probe)
- Assists RN with patient transport
- Prepares and positions patient for surgical procedure
- Provides psychological and physical comfort to patient and identifies changes in condition and report to RN
- Provides appropriate instrumentation and supplies to physician during procedure
- Performs point of care pre-cleaning for instruments and prepares/transports instruments for sterilization
- Performs high level disinfection to designated equipment
- Completes turnover of room between cases, cleaning all surfaces and preparing set up for next case
- Maintains equipment inventory, communicates needs with Biomed and Sterile Processing Department
- Strategically plans for new equipment and supply needs for program growth in collaboration with physician(s)
- Coordinates logistical support and transport of equipment and supplies to other health system locations
- In Radiation Oncology -coordinates with Anesthesia, Physics, and Radiology Departments (Ultrasound and Diagnostic X-ray) for intra-procedural imaging, radioactive seed planning and support. Generates weekly calendar of cases and shares with team members.
- Forecasts instrumentation set usage/schedule to improve Sterile Processing Department turnover
- Collaborates with equipment vendors on new equipment purchases and ensures timely preventative maintenance is completed as per Instructions for Use (IFUs)
- Maintains par levels of nutritional items for the procedures area"
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- High School Graduate
- Enrolled in an accredited school of nursing having completed fundamentals OR
- Bachelors Degree in a health care or science related field OR
- 2 years of surgical experience under the direction of a RN demonstrating knowledge of surgical instrumentation, infection prevention principles, methods and techniques involved in performing operating room services and adapting or modifying standards of practice for care of specific medical cases
Required Licensure and Certification
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) BLS
