Polysomnographic Technologist
Polysomnography Technologists are responsible for performing patient care activities and other tasks that contribute to high-quality, safe, and effective patient care. They execute protocols, perform sleep studies, calibrate, and maintain equipment, and educate patients, families, students, and other care providers. Technologists work under the supervision of the Sleep Disorders Center Manager and Medical Director. They have health care degrees with specialized training in sleep diagnostics. They sustain a clean environment, per Health System standards. Work Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 6:30pm – 6:30 am.
Responsibilities:
- Performs:
- The professional, clinical, and technical competencies.
- Patient set-up for polysomnography in accordance with departmental policies.
- Accurate scoring of polysomnographic records using established departmental criteria and generates reports.
- Multiple sleep latency tests according to established departmental procedures.
- Nocturnal oximetry studies and assesses oxygen requirements, when indicated.
- Maintenance and calibration on equipment according to manufacturer and department procedures.
- Draws and analyzes arterial blood gases according to departmental standards.
- Monitors the sleeping patient with documentation of significant events, ensuring continuous and accurate data collection, and assisting the patient, when necessary.
- Facilitates the maintenance of a sleep database.
- Trouble-shoots equipment and takes appropriate action to bring equipment back to operational standards.
- Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes according to hospital and department standards for infection prevention.
- Uses independent judgement in the application of policies/protocols and is self-motivated to take responsible and professional action within the scope of practice.
- Maintains a patient-centered focus and strives to support the mission, goals, and values of the hospital, department, and division.
- Follows policies, procedures, and department standards.
- Interacts with physicians and other health system staff to provide quality, safe, and efficient care for the patient.
- Maintains positive working relations with customers. Demonstrates mature, sensitive, and effective communications with all age groups, especially under high levels of stress.
- Assists in the oversight of other staff members during advanced procedures.
- At the direction of a supervisor, serves as the acting leader, as needed.
- Assists in the orientation, training, and evaluating New Grads, students, and new employees.
Assists with administrative tasks (e.g., patient scheduling, registration, telephone support, etc.), as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required:
Associates Degree in Respiratory Care, or related field (and/or a minimum of 2 years of related experience)
Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) within one year of hire
Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
Preferred:
Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Care or related field
Master’s degree in Respiratory Care or related field
Respiratory therapy license from the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts
Registered respiratory therapist
Additional respiratory therapy/RPSGT experience
Experience in clinical instruction of students
Membership in regional & national Respiratory Therapy or Sleep organization(s)
Certified in ACLS
