Physician Director - Infection Prevention & Control Job

We currently have an opening for Physician Director, Infection Prevention and Control

Responsibilities:

I. Leadership

  • Chairs the IPAC committee.
  • Supervises IPAC nurses and staff with the IPAC Manager in a dyad leadership arrangement.
  • Participates in the development of new quality improvement initiatives to reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections at Hospitals, in ambulatory areas, and Health System clinical affiliates.
  • Collaborates with other departments at all Health System locations to achieve effective, high quality programs that anticipate staff work flow to achieve these goals.
  • Network with SHEA and other professional organizations so as to bring contemporary IPAC principles and methods to the KU Health System.
  • Conduct research and scholarly activities related to IPAC.
  • Liaison with antibiotic stewardship efforts and activities.

II. Epidemiologist

  • Utilizes epidemiologic tools to identify patients and personnel at risk of infection, clustering or outbreaks of infections, variation in the levels of nosocomial infections or single cases of unusual infections.
  • Assists in the developing and monitoring of activities of the infection control practitioners related to continuous quality assessment and improvement to include but not limited to: surveillance for nosocomial infections, reportable diseases, employee/occupational health and safety.
  • Assists in the design of the collection, analysis and presentation of data.

III. Consultant

  • Serves as a system-wide Infection Control/ Hospital Epidemiology consultant, assisting with related inquiries from within and outside the hospital.
  • Provides consultation to health care providers in the assessment and management of patients/employees with infectious or communicable diseases.
  • Participates in the multi-disciplinary activities as advisor to the Environment of Care Committee.
  • Serves as advisor to the Employee/Occupational Health and Safety programs relative to infection control and prevention.
  • Assists in the review of infection control policies/procedures with each department head.
  • Acts as an institutional resource in the development, implementation, and interpretation of infection control policies and guidelines.
  • Liaison with the laboratory in decisions regarding implementation of rapid diagnostic testing, molecular testing, and other testing with infection control implications.

IV. Educator

  • Assists in the development of new training programs in general infection control and on specific topics as needed.
  • Assists with the maintenance of ongoing formal and informal educational programs for all hospital employees, physicians, and trainees.

V. Maintains clinical competence

  • Through ongoing review of current literature, by attending national meetings, seminars, formal courses, peer collaboration, and independent study.
  • Serves in rotation as inpatient infectious diseases consultant per schedule working with the Infectious Diseases Division Chief.

Requirements:

Current licensure as a physician (M.D. or D.O) required

Board certified in infectious diseases required

Completion of SHEA/CDC Training Course in Healthcare Epidemiology or equivalent required

Infectious disease fellowship including training in clinical infection control and related research preferred

Masters in epidemiology or public health, or other appropriate advanced degree preferred

Ability to work in a self-directed manner with initiative and objectivity required

Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work with and gain cooperation of physician colleagues, nursing, and other health care providers

Demonstrated ability to educate others formally and informally

Good computer and data management skills

The incumbent must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate

Statistical programming experience a plus
