Histotechnician
Histotechnicians are members of the Histology laboratory team who prepare tissue specimens for evaluation by Pathologists. Tasks performed include processing, embedding and sectioning tissues. Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, records and documentation with minimum supervision.
Responsibilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Process human tissue and body fluid specimens in preparation for microscopic examination.
- Perform technical duties, including labeling and filing, related to the production of histopathological slides for specimens.
- Section the embedded tissue, using a microtome and mount the section properly on a microscope slide.
- Properly orient and embed surgical tissue specimens.
- Follows all policies, procedures and accreditation standards/regulations.
- Follow quality control, quality assurance, safety, and infection control procedures.
- Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of supplies.
- Maintain effective communication and working relationships with all staff, physicians and vendors.
High School Diploma or GED
Two years of histology experience performing routine embedding and microtomy.
Must be able to read, write and speak English. Must have excellent telephone, verbal and written communication skills.
English
Preferred
60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from an accredited (regionally or nationally)* college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both),
OR an associate degree from an accredited (regionally or nationally)* college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the associate degree
